Consent-first measurement in performance marketing

Privacy regulation and platform changes are reshaping measurement. Performance marketing can adapt — if it measures less, but better.

Measurement is changing. Privacy laws, browser restrictions and mobile platform policies have reduced the amount of user-level data available to advertisers. Some see this as the end of performance marketing. It is more accurately the end of careless performance marketing.

What has changed

  • Consent is required in many jurisdictions before non-essential cookies or trackers can be used.
  • Browsers restrict third-party cookies and limit cross-site tracking.
  • Mobile platforms restrict device identifiers unless users opt in.

The result: fewer signals, more aggregated reporting, and more responsibility on the companies collecting data.

Why performance marketing adapts well

Performance marketing depends on one core fact: did this click lead to this conversion? That question can be answered with first-party data and server-to-server postbacks, without building cross-site profiles of users.

Practices that hold up:

  • First-party measurement. Advertisers record conversions on their own systems and send postbacks with a click ID — no third-party cookie required.
  • Data minimization. Collect what is needed to attribute and pay for the conversion, and nothing more.
  • Consent-aware tags. Marketing and analytics tags load only after consent, with clear categories and an easy way to change choices.
  • Aggregated optimization. Optimize by source, placement and cohort rather than by individual profiles.

What to ask partners

  1. How are clicks and conversions recorded, and where is the data stored?
  2. Which personal data is shared with whom, and why?
  3. How is consent collected and honored on the pages you control?
  4. How long is data retained?
