App install campaigns: from first click to retained user
How to plan, launch and optimize app install campaigns — store pages, MMPs, creatives, sources and post-install measurement.
App install campaigns aim to put your app on the right people's phones. The best ones are planned backwards: from the user you want to keep, to the install that brings them in.
Before launch
- Store page. Screenshots, title and first lines of description do most of the converting. Localize them per market.
- Measurement. Integrate an MMP, verify install attribution on real devices, and map key in-app events.
- Onboarding. Every step between install and first value costs users. Shorten it before you pay for traffic.
- Target events. Decide which early event best predicts value (see day-7 value).
Choosing sources
| Source type | Typical strength |
|---|---|
| In-app networks | Scale and reach across many apps |
| Social | Targeting and creative flexibility |
| Native / content | Contextual intent, explainer-friendly |
| Search | High intent, limited volume |
| Creators | Trust and demonstration |
Most campaigns combine several sources and shift budget as data arrives.
Creatives
Show the app doing the thing users want. Test hooks in the first seconds of video, test store screenshots, and retire creatives before they fatigue. Keep a log of what each test changed.
Optimization loop
- Launch with a learning budget across a few sources.
- After enough installs, compare sources on retention and early events — not just CPI.
- Scale the winners, fix or pause the rest.
- Consider CPA on the value event for proven sources.
- Repeat per GEO.
Quality
Watch click-to-install times, device consistency, retention and event rates per source. Agree traffic rules before launch — for example, whether incentivized installs are allowed — and enforce them consistently.
