Five signals of low-quality traffic (and what to do about them)

Invalid traffic rarely announces itself. These five patterns are where it usually shows up — and how to respond without punishing good partners.

Low-quality and invalid traffic is one of the oldest problems in performance marketing. It is also one of the most misunderstood: most bad traffic is not dramatic fraud, but patterns that only look wrong when you compare sources side by side.

Here are five signals worth monitoring, in roughly the order they tend to appear.

1. Click-to-install time that is too short

Real users need time to reach a store page, download and open an app. When a large share of installs from a source happen within seconds of the click, it can indicate click injection or other attribution manipulation. Look at the distribution of click-to-install times per source, not the average.

2. Click patterns no human produces

Bursts of clicks at fixed intervals, huge click volumes with almost no conversions, or clicks concentrated in a few minutes every hour suggest automated activity or click flooding. Compare click-through and conversion rates between sources in the same GEO.

3. Duplicate identities

The same device ID, email, phone number or payment fingerprint appearing under different "new" users is a strong signal — especially for lead generation and registration offers.

4. Device and environment anomalies

Emulators, impossible device/OS combinations, outdated user agents claiming new OS versions, and datacenter IP ranges all point to non-human traffic.

5. Geography that does not add up

When the IP country, SIM country, device language and time zone disagree, the traffic may be routed through proxies. One mismatch is normal (travel exists); several together are not.

Responding well

  • Segment before you judge. Evaluate by sub-ID or placement, not by the whole publisher. Most partners have a mix of good and weak placements.
  • Agree rules in advance. Traffic-quality rules and the evidence used to reject conversions should be written into offer terms before launch.
  • Look downstream. Retention, repeat purchases and lead contact rates reveal quality that front-of-funnel metrics cannot.

Quality monitoring is one of the principles UniconAds is built around — see how the network works for advertisers.
